Facts about beavers for children

Beavers are some of the largest rodents in the world. They have thick fur, webbed feet, and flattened, scaly tails. In fact, beavers are very industrious. They use their strong teeth to fell large trees to build houses and dams. The beaver’s dwelling is called a dam. Beaver dams are small, domed dwellings made of woven sticks, grass, and moss covered with mud.

All beavers need water to survive, so we can find them in or near freshwater ponds, lakes, rivers, and marshes. Beavers live well on land and under water because of their closing nostrils and ears and clear eye sheaths.  Beavers also have large teeth 20 to 25 mm long!
