Notes on ferrets for children

Ferrets are small furry creatures with long tails, short legs, and long claws. These animals are true scavengers. They build their homes from the old tunnels of prairie dogs and the burrows of other animals. Domesticated ferrets usually live in cages, but they need at least four hours a day to run outside their cages! Domesticated ferrets are very friendly and adjust their sleeping schedule to their owner’s schedule.

Wild ferrets have a very good sense of smell, sight, and hearing, and they tend to start moving at dusk, as they are nocturnal creatures. They prefer to live and roam alone, spending their nights searching for food. Ferrets are carnivores and eat only the meat of possums, rabbits, prairie dogs, hedgehogs and rodents. They also supplement their diet with amphibians, birds, bird eggs, and fish.
